Healthy Hot Seat

with Simon Schuh

Q1. If wanting to further your health, what are topics you’d want to learn more about?  S: Specific dietary planning for leaning out muscle/gaining muscle, different methods of physical exercise (yoga, cardio intervals, HITT training, aerobics, etc.), and how a dancer’s training can be useful towards non-dancers (stretching, dynamic strengthening) Q2. As a dancer with certain pressures and comparing yourself to other dancers did you ever feel the need to change your natural appearance or change certain habits?  S: Yes, growing up as a teenager the focus was to get bulk and strong. However, now that I'm in my 20s, the focus is to lengthen and lean out my muscles. Q3. Do you feel satisfied physically, mentally and emotionally after a rigorous 3 years, going into your senior year, at a highly renowned dance school within a prestigious institution?  S: Physically, I feel pushed and that my body has been sculpted from our technique classes. I wish that the program would institute more cross training, somatic practices and other athletic activities. Just like any college program can take a toll on one's emotional well-being, a lot of mental issues could arise as well being in a dance program because this art form is heavily reliant on how you look aesthetically, your talent, and all external features. Therefore, if you’re not mentally focused, it may hinder one’s self-esteem, body dysmorphia and anxiety. You can create a healthy lifestyle for yourself by eating the right foods, drinking a sufficient amount of water and surrounding yourself with like-minded people.  Q4. What’s your ideal image of a healthy lifestyle? S: To indulge in everything moderately and use my mental, physical and emotional state to help my life progress in a way that will benefit my learning and intimate relationships.  Q5. If you could change one thing about your current lifestyle … what would it be? S: To enjoy working out everyday!
